Saturday’s thrilling Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium saw the Buccaneers claim a well-deserved 2023/2024 ‘double’ over their fierce rivals.

At the final whistle the scoreboard read 3-2 in Orlando Pirates’ favour.

Amakhosi opened the scoring in the sixth minute thanks to a goal by Ashley du Preez.

The Buccaneers equalised through Monnapule Saleng in the 24th minute only for the Glamour Boys to reclaim the lead through Du Preez on the stroke of half-time.

Orlando Pirates got back on level terms for a second time through Thabiso Lebitso (58th minute), before they took the lead for the first time in the match thanks to a second goal from Saleng (68th minute).

ORLANDO PIRATES UP TO SECOND IN THE STANDINGS

It was only the second league ‘double’ for Orlando Pirates over Kaizer Chiefs since the PSL professional era kicked off in the 1996/1997 season.

The Buccaneers last completed a league ‘double’ over Kaizer Chiefs in the 2008/2009 season under then coach Ruud Krol.

The three points moved Orlando Pirates to second place in the DStv Premiership standings, while Kaizer Chiefs dropped to seventh ahead of the weekend’s remaining matches.
