Bafana Bafana skipper, Ronwen Williams believes fans can be proud of the team after their improved performance at AFCON.

After reaching the semi-finals of the Afcon tournament, captain Ronwen Williams says Bafana Bafana fans can now be proud of the team.

Williams captained the former Afcon champions, Bafana, and believes reaching the Last Four of the continental showpiece means they have restored hope and belief in the fans.

The Mamelodi Sundowns keeper and Bafana captain, Williams said this following their loss to Nigeria in the semi-finals on Wednesday night.

Bafana are now preparing to meet DR Congo in the fight for a third-place finish on Saturday and Williams says they wanted to reach the final as he praised the fans.

BAFANA SKIPPER ON SUPPORT FROM THE FANS

The captain who managed to keep four clean sheets for Bafana ahead of the loss to Nigeria, Williams states that he has been crying for support from the fans.

“We felt the support on social media platforms,” said Bafana captain Williams said about the fans.

“It has been going crazy in the last few weeks, and we have seen each and every message of support, of encouragement…and this is what I have been crying for in the last year or so.

“It’s for the public to get behind the team, but in saying that, it’s all about results.

“We got the results now, hopefully, this can be a relationship that we can build together as a country and we need each and everyone. 

“We need them to fill the stadiums, the words of encouragement.”’

Meanwhile, Bafana players and captain Williams’ teammates also expressed their feelings following their contribution at Afcon – Siyanda Xulu said they are happy as a team.

RONWEN WILLIAMS AND BAFANA WANTED TO WIN THE AFCON TROPHY

The SuperSport United and Bafana defender, Xulu who started against the Super Eagles, added to captain Williams’ sentiments that their mission was to lift the trophy.

“We wanted to go as far as we could in the tournament. Our main goal was to make sure we go out from the group stages and qualify for the knockout stages, which is something that made us really proud as a team,” Bafana defender Xulu told the Safa media department.

“It was just a dream for us to make it through to the quarterfinal and go to the next round. We are really proud and we are very much aware that we still have a game to play. 

“We still have the third position to achieve. We are all happy and we are proud as much as we wanted to go through to the final.”
