Sad news: Two tragedies hit Two Oceans Marathon

Two deaths tragically marred the Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathons that took place over the weekend in Cape Town.

Two deaths marred the Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathons that took place over the weekend in Cape Town.

According to the Daily Voice website, a runner, named as Siraaj Toefy representing the Ommiedraai Friends Athletic Club, died shortly after completing his 12th Two Oceans Ultra Marathon on Saturday.

He was 60.

Toefy completed the 56km race in a time of 5:30:30.

TWO OCEANS MARATHON EXTENDS CONDOLENCES

After the race he was reported to be feeling unwell and was taken to hospital where it was discovered he had suffered a stroke and he died shortly thereafter.

Toefy is survived by his wife Shireen, two daughters and three grandchildren.

Prior to joining Ommiedraai Friends Athletic Club, Toefy was a member of both the Central Athletics Club and VOB Running Club.

In addition to his 12 Two Oceans Ultra Marathons, Toefy also completed four Comrades Marathons and 25 Cape Town Cycle Tours.

The Two Oceans Marathon confirmed Toefy’s tragic death in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, a second unnamed runner at the time of publishing, died after collapsing with around 1km remaining of Sunday’s half marathon.

The Two Oceans Marathon again confirmed the death in a Facebook post.
