Authorities have arrested six people for the alleged hijacking and brutal murder of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs.

POLICE HAVE ARRESTED SIX PEOPLE

A week ago, someone shot and killed the 24-year-old promising soccer star in a hijacking at a petrol station in the north-west of Johannesburg.

Fleurs was in a red VW Golf 8 GTI at the petrol station on 14th Avenue, on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter, when someone shot him once in the upper body.

According to reports, Fleurs bravely fought back the hijackers before they shot him.

Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a police spokesperson, stated that Fleurs was confronted by two armed men while waiting to be served by the petrol attendant.

“The suspects pointed him with a firearm and, took him out of his vehicle and shot him once in the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice.”

They took Fleurs to the nearest medical care centre, where medical staff certified him dead on arrival.

Masondo stated that a team led by police crime intelligence officers arrested the six in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

This comes as the Gauteng provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, appointed a team of seasoned detectives from the provincial office to investigate and search for the suspects.

“The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, while the vehicle that was already stripped was recovered on Monday,”- Masondo said.

Masondo furthermore said police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate. The syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing.

Authorities expect the six to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Police have opened a case of murder and car hijacking for investigation.

Masondo added that the police investigations continue.

Earlier this week, Luke’s family and friends gathered at the place where he tragically lost his life.

Social media posts showed touching scenes where the group of mourners held hands and formed a circle at the spot Luke was shot in the chest at close range.

MEMORIAL SERVICE DETAILS

Chiefs have now announced the details of Fleurs’ memorial service. The organisers scheduled the event to take place at the FNB Stadium on Thursday at 12:00.

Media, fans, and fellow footballing personnel have all received invitations.
