Tuesday, 5 March was a sad day in the South African football fraternity with news that former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender Siphiwe Mkhonza had died.

He was 44.

Mkhonza passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning at his home. 

“Dr. Mnandi”, as he was popularly known in football circles, had been suffering from a kidney infection for quite some time. 

He had been admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg a month ago and was released after showing signs of recovery.

At the time of his death, Mkhonza was working since 2013 as a football analyst at the public broadcaster, the SABC.

The family will announce funeral arrangement details in due course.

Mkhonza’s death was confirmed by his agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane.

WHO WAS SIPHIWE MKHONZA?

Siphiwe Ignatius Mkhonza was a South African footballer who played as a centre-back.

Mkhonza was born in Kwa-Thema, Springs in Gauteng to parents Mavis Motsile and Joseph Mkhonza.

His father is the former head coach of the South Africa women’s national team (Banyana Banyana) and coached the the side at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Siphiwe Mkhonza attended Thulisa Primary School and would go on to attend Kenneth Masekela Secondary School.

Mkhonza played for several clubs as a youth, starting his playing days at Skheshes Babes, and then going on to play for Tip Top FC, Lusitano FC, Munich FC and Katlehong City.

He played club football for Bloemfontein Celtic, Ria Stars, Golden Arrows, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards.

He also won seven caps for Bafana Bafana.
