Residents in the east of Pretoria, in South Africa, were shocked this morning to discover a tiger roaming their streets!

The tiger had allegedly escaped from The Farm Inn Country Hotel & Wildlife Sanctuary in Silverlakes, just 20 minutes from Central Pretoria.

Local business (and aptly named!) BeCool Rainbownation uploaded photos and text to their Facebook page about the rare sighting. Plus there’s a video (view below).

Sleep kitty
Rangers and crew from The Farm Inn arrive.

BeCool – which specialises in neoprene sleeves to keep bottles of water chilled – said the cool cat was seen in Pretoria East from around 7 to 8am this morning, hanging around near the fence of The Meadows.

The tiger was darted by The Farm Inn rangers and crew, and safely returned back to its enclosure at the Wildlife Sanctuary, where an investigation will apparently be launched to determine how the tiger escaped.

Moments after being darted.

BeCool said: “Well done Farm Inn on a safe capture, very well executed and it seemed none of us or the animal was under any stress at any time.”

They did add later: “Wow wat ‘n oggend! Ons ry wildtuin toe oor ‘n paar weke, wonder of ons nie maar net moet bly en in Pretoria se strate moet rondry nie.” (Wow, what a morning. We’re going to a park in a couple of weeks’ time, wonder if we should just stay and drive around the streets of Pretoria.”)
