Aussie Cricket Legend Shane Warne: “There’s Something Special About South Africans”

Update: Shane Warne sadly died today (4 March 2022) at the age of 52 from a suspected heart attack. The below interview is from 2017. 

Australian cricket legend Shane Warne reckons his favourite tour ever was going to South Africa in 1994, and that “there’s something special about the South Africans”.

In an interview on the Dan Nicholl show, Shane says in those 23 years of going to South Africa, and just along the way, he’s made a lot of South African friends.

He says South Africans and Aussies are very similar because we both “love our sport… our banter… and our beer”.

Shane says: “So when we played against each other there was as hard a cricket as you’ll ever play… but it was the good old days, when afterwards we’d all sit in the rooms and just have a beer and enjoy each other’s company. And I think that’s a shame that’s missing from the game now.”

He also recalls an incident when Brian McMillan gave the Aussies the fright of their lives in the dressing room, armed with an AK-47! (According to McMillan it was ‘just’ a 9mm.) Watch below…
