You may have seen the viral video of a cool Granny dancing in the back of a car earlier this week… but you may not have realised she’s a South African granny. A very cool granny… from Vryheid.
According to HeraldLIVE, the video features 77-year-old Maureen Craig getting her groove on for ‘Gobisiqolo’ by Bhizer, featuring Busiswa, SC Gorna and Trigger Bhepepe. The video has been viewed tens of thousands of times already.
Maureen – who moved from Scotland to SA in 1975 – told the Herald she couldn’t resist dancing when she heard the song. Of it’s popularity, she said: “I am shocked. I didn’t expect it as we were just having fun in the moment… It was my first time hearing [the song]‚ but I asked my granddaughter to play it over because it just made me want to dance.” She said her granddaughter helped ‘coach’ her.
Granddaughter Jasmine Branford (20) – who now lives in PE from Vryheid – told the Herald: “My nana is so much fun to be around because when I play music‚ she dances and you can see the happiness.”
She never expected the video to go viral, but says, “it made us feel happy knowing that with all the things going on in South Africa‚ and despite the different cultures‚ music brings joy and you can’t help but dance. To see people enjoying this makes such a difference.”
