1- Manchester United 7 Roma 1 (2007)

Sir Alex Ferguson had a difficult assignment on his hand when his side had to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Roma to make it to the semi-finals of the Champions League. However, Manchester United made a meal of that task as they registered an emphatic victory at Old Trafford.

Both teams started attacking from the very beginning but it was United who got the opener in the 11th minute of the game through Michael Carrick. Alan Smith netted a goal six minutes later followed by one from Rooney.

Roma desperately tried to get back in the game but their search for a goal left them more vulnerable at the back, and Cristiano Ronaldo soon fired a goal to fully exploit that situation.

The second-half brought more destruction for Roma as Ronaldo, Carrick, and Evra each netted a goal to put a gloss on the scoreline. Daniele De Rossi’s 69th-minute goal was no consolation for the Roma fans as their team suffered a humiliating defeat to crash out of the Champions League.

2- Manchester United 1 Barcelona 0 (2008)

Manchester United missed a penalty against Barcelona but still managed to hold the Catalans 0-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at Camp Nou. That meant that the Old Trafford match would be the decider.

Manchester United was dealt a heavy blow before the start of the match as both Rooney and Vidic was ruled out of the match due to injuries. The Red Devils had a nervy beginning but they soon settled when Paul Scholes fired them ahead with a thunderous strike in the 14th minute of the game. Barcelona threatened to score on many occasions but the discipline and resilience of United’s defense denied them the equalizer. Edwin van der Sar made a fine save from the edge of the area to deny Messi while Deco twice came close to haul his team level.

In the end, the solo goal from Scholes was sufficient to fire the Red Devils into the final. Afterward, United faced Chelsea in the Champions League final and managed to beat the Premier League rivals 6-5 on penalties to lift the coveted trophy.

3- Manchester United 2 Inter Milan 0 (1999)

This was one of the best matches of Manchester United in their 1998-99 season. Before the match, there had been a lot of talk about the rivalry between David Beckham and Diego Simeone (a player who simulated injury from a Beckham kick to get the England midfielder sent off during a 1998 World Cup match).

Beckham performed splendidly to contribute to United’s qualification in the next round. The Italians tried their best to limit the influence of David Beckham but failed to do so. Beckham delivered a superb cross that Dwight Yorke converted with a neat header. Someone responded by curling a shot to the right of Schmeichel’s post. Inter threatened to equalize on several occasions but United was resolute in their defending to deny them an equalizer. In the end, the Red Devils could take away a huge advantage due to the brilliant combination of Beckham and Yorke for the second leg. Once more, Beckham was the provider and Yorke the finisher.

United later held Inter 1-1 in Milan to progress to the semi-finals. This was the season when United secured the historic Treble of trophies by winning the Premier League, the Champions League, and the FA Cup.
