Traffic cameras monitored by the South African National Roads Agency on a highway near Johannesburg were used this week to catch a group of hijackers within 13 minutes, according to a video posted online.

At least three men were filmed hijacking a pink delivery van. The vehicle was then tracked via SANRAL cameras until two metro police vehicles, which had been warned of the approaching van, were ready to intercept the hijackers.

The swift action by SANRAL comes at a time when the road agency is in the news again over its controversial etoll system in Gauteng. While the Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni has insisted etolls must stay and be paid by road users, Gauteng premier David Makhura has vouched to scrap the system.

President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this week instructed Mboweni, Makhura and the Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula to reach a decision on the way forward for etolls so that a policy could be tabled by August.
