A man was arrested by police for using a Colt 45 as a gear lever on suspicion of being in possession of an illegal weapon in South Africa. Photo supplied.

The Colt 45 which was being used to select gears on the suspects vehicle looked like something straight out of a Mad Max film.

Randfontein Police arrested the driver for possession of an unlicensed firearm during a crime prevention operation aimed at getting dangerous weapons off the street.

Police spokesman Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the driver was among 97 people arrested during the 24 hour blitz and that the weapon had been sent for ballistics testing.

Sergeant Hendricks said: “Violence is the leading cause of death in South Africa and firearms are the cause of many deaths and it our duty to protect our community and keep them safe”.

The owner of the gun has appeared in court and has been released pending the results of ballistic tests.

South Africa is sadly known as one of the most dangerous countries in the world with over 21,000 murders a year and 40,000 rapes annually. A nationwide operation is ongoing to reduce crime in the country. Today President Ramaphosa called on the police to make an extra effort to capture the killer of a 21-year-old student Precious Ramabulana who was stabbed over 50 times in the early hours of Sunday morning.
