Another Murder Angers South Africans: Namhla Mtwa – Carte Blanche Tonight

Another day, another woman dead in South Africa. A furious family took matters into their own hands to find #JusticeForNamhla after the deadly shooting of the 35-year-old in the Eastern Cape went almost unnoticed.

With police slow to act, Namhla Mtwa’s furious family took matters into their own hands. Upset that the police were not moving fast enough, despite identifying a “person of interest” and knowing that there had been no motive of robbery (no car or cellphone stolen), her grieving sister, Sanga rallied for public support by sharing horrifying photos and videos of her sister – who had allegedly been abused by her longtime partner – as well as screenshots of WhatsApp messages her sister had sent her before the murder. This led to an outcry in South Africa and trending hashtags #JusticeForHlehle and #JusticeForNamhla, with many other South Africans sharing horror stories of  their loved ones lost to GBV crimes, and the police issuing a statement that detectives were on the case.

“When the graphic videos and images of the late Namhla Mtwa started circulating online, many of us felt hopeless, defeated. When will this war on women end?” Carte Blanche tweeted this week as it prepared for its show tonight focusing on the GBV pandemic in South Africa. The current affairs show points out with case after case, protest after protest, violence against women and children in this country continues. “We need the justice system to do something about the killings of women in South Africa,” said one woman at an EFF protest.

Presenter Claire Mawisa sums up the feeling of many South Africans when she says: “I was scrolling through social media when Namhla’s story went viral and I avoided it. I scrolled past the posts. I didn’t want to engage with the content. I didn’t feel like I had the emotional capacity to deal with another Gender Based Violence story. All I kept on thinking was: here we go again South Africa…”

Mawisa says: “So when will ‘enough is enough’ finally be enough?”

Tonight the investigative show asks: Was the 21 April murder another story of violent crime, or another terrifying case of gender-based violence? And how did this deadly shooting in the Eastern Cape almost go unnoticed?

Mtwa was reportedly shot and murdered in her car when she arrived at her home in Mthatha. Her mother allegedly screamed for the killer to stop, but he ignored her. Mtwa suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her upper body, and died at the scene.

Sanga wrote in one post: “I am tired of acting like I don’t know what life my sister was living. We feared for her life. She thought one day she will walk out freely from the abuse. My sister was abused emotionally, physically and financially.”
