You might believe that a puppy or kitten would be safer than an older dog if you have young children.

This may be because they are smaller and will fit into your home more easily. This isn’t always the case.

Young animals are delicate and easily hurt, especially if you have curious children around.

Kids usually enjoy picking up the animal or pulling tails as an experiment.

On the other end, puppies may use their teeth or claws – not the best set of toys.

Puppies also need a lot of extra training and care, which might be difficult if you have young children.

WHY GET AN OLDER DOG?

It may be better to choose an older animal with a calm, sweet temperament.

A friendly adult dog (two years of age or older) with experience with young children is ideal.

The majority of older dogs are already housebroken, and some have even undergone dog training.

If you have any specific questions about older dogs, speak with a breeder or staff of an animal shelter.

Children who assist with pet care acquire ethical values and a respect for all living things.

As they would to a beloved stuffed animal, they might whisper their private sentiments into their pet’s fluffy ears.

Also, pets can foster a child’s connection to nature and their understanding of the life cycle.

Perhaps most importantly, dogs teach our kids to love and be devoted to others.
