The good news is government did reduce vehicle license renewal fees for users on its eNATIS website earlier in the year, so that’s one thing to smile about at least. And the portal now services all provinces in the country for vehicle license renewals. I’m sure you don’t need us to remind you but renewing your vehicle license needs to happen every year. If you miss the deadline – plus the 21-day grace period – you’ll be liable for a late-licensing penalty fee.
Sadly, due to the dysfunctional state of the South African Postal Service right now, the likelihood of you receiving your Vehicle license renewal notice (MVL2) is almost zero. Because of that you need to keep on top of your renewal date yourself.
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL PAY PER PROVINCE
Owing to the fact that most passenger cars driven on the road weigh between 750 kg at the very lightest to 2 750 kg for a large luxury SUV or bakkie, we’re going to focus on these figures only. We’re also going to ignore trailers and semi-trailers.

It’s interesting to note that Gauteng is the cheapest province to renew your vehicle license in certain categories. Taking the most common Tare of between 1 250 and 1 500 kg, it costs R600 in Gauteng, R624 in the Western Cape and R648 in KZN. While the Western Cape is cheapest for heavier vehicles.
WHAT IF YOU’RE LATE TO RENEW YOUR VEHICLE LICENSE?
Don’t stress, you have a 21-day grace period to renew an expired vehicle license. This starts counting down from the expiry date on your vehicle license. Miss the 21-day grace period and you will pay a late-renewal penalty. This fee is calculated at one tenth of your annual licensing fee per month. So, don’t dawdle because the longer you leave it, the more expensive it will be.
