Two young boys sadly drowned on Saturday afternoon while out playing on a kayak in Nature’s Valley Lagoon, Grootrivier, Plettenberg Bay in South Africa.

Three local boys, believed to be between the ages of 8 and 10, had gone out on the kayak when they got into difficulty. One of the boys managed to reach the shore to raise the alarm.

NSRI rescue swimmers were activated just before 15h00, and two NSRI rescue craft were launched.

“Using the Spring high tide both rescue craft were able to navigate the Lagoon Mouth to enter into the lagoon,” NSRI said in a statement on Sunday.

One child was soon located and recovered from the water. “CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) efforts were commenced but after all efforts to resuscitate the child were exhausted sadly he was declared deceased,” said NSRI. SAPS and other EMS responders were also on the scene.

Following a search, the second missing child was located, and recovered from the water, but sadly it was too late and the child was declared deceased.

“A counsellor assisted the surviving child who was then taken into the care of his parents,” said NSRI. “The bodies of the two deceased children were taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.”

Police have opened an Inquest docket.
