Cape Town Grabs World Attention as 1st City in the World To Run Out of Water Possibly

Cape Town is becoming one of the biggest breaking stories internationally, as the world watches to see if it will become the first major metropolitan on the planet to run out of water. Day Zero – when Cape Town residents’ taps are due to be turned off – is fast looming and currently set at 21 April 2018. That’s 90 days and counting.

Since Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille announced earlier this week that Day Zero appears imminent (“very likely”), and that on 1 February residents will be restricted to only 50 litres per day per person, the disaster has made headlines around the world… with Forbes describing it as a Mad Max Scenario in their headline.

CNN’s weather anchor Derek van Dam, who lived in South Africa for a few years (and was eNCA’s Chief Meteorologist), is doing all he can to raise awareness about the issue.

In a message to Capetonians, Van Dam said on social media: “As DAY ZERO rushes forward, I remain committed to tell the world your story, Cape Town. Here is my latest CNN update on the worsening drought and water crisis in the most beautiful city in the world. Please save water now!”
