The coastal city of Port Elizabeth is already famous as South Africa’s Friendly City… but there’s one special guy who’s adding an extra smile to everyone’s day – a singer called Wessel who busks along the beachfront.

Last Sunday he was filmed singing Lionel Richie’s ‘Easy Like Sunday Morning’, and this weekend the video was shared by many who feel it’s time one of South Africa’s friendliest citizens gets noticed by more people than just the lucky locals and tourists to PE. Watch below.

According to locals Wessel plays mainly on the beachfront, especially in front of a restaurant called Angelos. You can usually find him near the pier between 08h00 and midday on weekend mornings.

Port Elizabeth residents have been singing his praises on Facebook. Glynnis Brown said: “He is brilliant and a lovely humble guy at that!” Linda van Zyl added: “Everybody knows him and is a welcome character”, and Kim MacLean says: “He’s been doing this for years always with a smile on his face and a nod to those he sees regularly.”

Wessel was overwhelmed with the support, and through a friend Ana Freere said: “Hi to everyone, thanks for your support. Bless you all with health and wealth. From Wessel.”

The athletes you can see training in the background of this video are probably preparing for Ironman Africa, which is set for 15 April 2018.

A couple of months ago, SAPeople posted this video, filmed by Jacqui Koopman Lavens:
