In the third part of this mini-series, let’s explore how this intersection of entrepreneurship and service to our nation exemplifies the journey toward becoming an Honorary Consul.

First instalment: From the Hon Consul’s Desk: An intersection of diplomacy and entrepreneurship

Second instalment: From the Hon Consul’s Desk: A personal journey to diplomatic service

Noting the core objective here entrepreneurially was to solve a problem in South Africa with the latest
researched scientific innovations.

My collaboration with Prof. Fritz Pragst, a leading researcher in the field, led to the creation of the world’s first “commercial” hair alcohol test.

SA faces Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FaS) public health challenges

This test not only became a tool used by authorities in Germany and the UK court system but also opened new avenues for addressing public health challenges in South Africa, particularly concerning Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FaS).

Note: South Africa has the highest reported rates of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder in the world:
111.1 per 1 000 of the population.

Accordingly, to the National Library of Medicine, this disorder affects seven million people.

Bringing this technology to South Africa was not just about introducing a new medical test; it was about responding to a pressing social issue.

Parts of South Africa have struggled with high rates of FAS, impacting countless lives.

By introducing a method to detect alcohol exposure in new-borns, we aimed to provide early intervention opportunities and raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

Early interventions of such a condition can make a tremendous difference in the care of the child.

This endeavour highlights the potential for South African entrepreneurs abroad to leverage their positions, knowledge, and networks to bring home solutions that address local challenges.

It’s a testament to how entrepreneurial ventures can transcend commercial success and contribute to meaningful social impact.

The advice for South Africans abroad is clear: always be on the lookout for innovations that can address issues back home.

It’s not just about the commercial value – it’s about fostering positive change and making a lasting
difference.

This approach not only enriches your professional journey but also aligns with the deeper mission of serving our country, embodying the essence of what it means to be a ‘global South African’.
