Residents in Johannesburg are facing further water disruptions as a 14-hour outage is scheduled to affect additional areas within the city.

The water outage is scheduled to commence on 14 March at 7:00 and conclude at 21:00. It will impact several neighborhoods, including Sunninghill, Gallo Manor, Edenburg, Wendywood, Waterfall, Woodmead, and parts of Morningside.

WATER OUTAGES WORSEN CITY CRISIS

This exacerbates the already dire situation in the city, where numerous regions, such as Soweto, Randburg, Roodepoort, Joburg South, and Central, have been without water for days.

Johannesburg Water attributes these disruptions to challenges encountered at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station earlier in the month.

“While most systems were gradually recovering, setbacks have now emerged in two critical systems,” stated the entity.

Among the affected areas are Soweto, Randburg, Roodepoort, Joburg South, and Central, where residents have been water outages for days.

RAND WATER PUMP STATION DISRUPTION

The root of the problem traces back to challenges encountered at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station on 3 and 4 March. This disruption caused water distribution issues across various systems managed by Johannesburg Water.

While most systems were gradually recovering, setbacks have now emerged in two critical systems.
Specifically, the Randburg systems, including Linden 1 and 2, Blairgowrie, and Kensington B1, alongside the Commando system, notably the Hursthill segment, have encountered setbacks due to inadequate incoming water supply.

This has led to a rapid depletion of water levels in reservoirs. Residents are now facing situations ranging from poor water pressure to complete unavailability.

COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO RESOLVE WATER OUTAGES

Efforts are underway to address the issue. Technical teams from Johannesburg Water and Rand Water are collaborating to identify the underlying causes and devise effective solutions.

In the interim, Johannesburg Water is deploying alternative measures, such as water tankers, to alleviate the strain on affected residents.

Additionally, plans are in motion to bolster resources for water tanker deployment.
