WHY DOGS SHOULD NEVER EAT ONIONS

Dogs should not eat onions.

Never feed onions to your dog, whether raw or cooked. All parts are toxic.

Avoid bulbs, leaves, peel, juice, and products with onion.

Be cautious when preparing onions or products with onion.

Allium Genus members like red onions, yellow onions, chives, scallions, leeks, and garlic are harmful.

Garlic is even more toxic. If your dog swallows garlic, it’s a medical emergency. Go to the vet.

WHAT MAKES THEM TOXIC

Onions have a compound called N-propyl Disulfide that causes harm.

This compound leads to hemolysis, which damages red blood cells and causes anemia.

Anemia affects oxygen flow to organs, leading to organ failure and death.

Onions are risky for all dogs, but toxicity depends on weight.

For dogs weighing 10-29 pounds, 22 grams of onion is too much.

77 grams is dangerous for 30-59 pound dogs, and 136 grams for bigger dogs.

Any amount of onion is risky. If your dog consumes some, call the vet right away.
