Pollard and Am were both surprisingly excluded from Jacques Nienaber’s 33-man Rugby World Cup squad.

Both players have been battling injuries. However, their exclusion came as a surprise given that both men were scheduled to recover in time for the pool stage matches. Now, we bring you the latest update on Pollard and Am’s fitness and their chances of featuring in France.

In contrast, Am is now back in training having recovered from his knee injury.

“Lukhanyo is probably about another two weeks away from being fit. Handre is on the edge of being fully fit, he just needs a lot of fitness,” Nienaber told SARugbyMag over two weeks ago.

So, will either men feature in the Boks Rugby World Cup title defence?

POLLARD AND AM COULD FEATURE, HERE’S HOW…

Both players are on currently standby.

Therefore, if any one of the current 33-man squad gets injured, they could be flown into the squad. In all likeliness, Pollard is probably the first player who will be called up a given that their is only one specialist flyhalf in the current squad in Manie Libbok.

Am is likely the next option with only one specialist 13 in Jesse Kriel.

Canan Moodie was brilliant against NZ but he has played all but one of his tests on the wing. It is a true privilege to have such world class options providing cover, this is testament to the quality of depth in SA rugby at the moment.
