It’s hard to watch this without wanting to sob with pride – South Africa’s comedian who was “born a crime”, Trevor Noah, interviewing South Africa’s Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron on Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’! And their main topic of conversation is of course… South Africa.

As can be seen in the interview, the two were ecstatic to do the show together. “I am so happy to be here,” she says. “I don’t think you understand how excited I am,” he answers.

Trevor confesses that when Charlize won her Academy Award (for ‘Monster’), he sat in his VW Golf, after hearing it on the radio, and cried, saying over and over “she’s so good, she’s so amazing”. Charlize said it was exactly the same for her when Trevor clinched the job at The Daily Show.

Charlize was on the show to talk about her latest movie – ‘Atomic Blonde’ – in which she plays a “kickass” M16 agent who’s sent into Berlin five days before the wall falls.

Talking about her action-packed role and doing her own stunts, Charlize took the conversation back to SA: “I feel like South African girls are just tough! There’s something in the water in South Africa, right?”

To which Trevor jokes back: “Cholera”… BUT then quickly backtracks to clarify that actually SA has some of the cleanest drinking water in the world.

Charlize and Trevor also discuss her Charlize Theron Foundation, which has been successful in and around South Africa in helping people fight Aids.

She admits she loves it when Trevor asks: “As a fellow South African…”

As fellow South African expats they discuss what it’s like when people ask if there’s a zebra in your garden, or (in the case of Charlize) how she can be a white girl from Africa.

Charlize admits she misses ALL the food in South Africa – melktert, koeksisters and a regde braai, pap en sous… but says she’s lucky, because of her Foundation, that she gets to go back at least once or twice a year… and then she “pigs out”.

Talking about what she misses, Charlize says: “There’s something in the soil there, there’s something in the air, something in the people that you just can’t find anywhere else…”

To which Trevor, always the comedian, replies: “Cholera!” And then adds: “I had to. I’m so wrong for doing it. But I had to!”
