The NSRI has released a video showing another incredible Pink Buoy rescue, this time in Kleinmond in the Western Cape, South Africa, involving three people.

According to Schalk Boonzaaier, NSRI Klienmond station commander, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon.

“Renaldo Arthur was sitting at the benches behind the trees in Kleinmond Harbour. When he heard shouting coming from the Harbour wall +-70m away. Investigating the commotion he noticed 3 people in distress in the water. So he ran over to the Harbour wall to try and help them, injuring his knee in the process.”

There were two women and one man in the water. The man was trying to save one of the women, but had to swim back to the harbour wall or risk drowning himself.

The woman he was trying to save fortunately made it to safety, BUT the other woman was “really struggling” and her head went underwater a few times.

At this point Renaldo jumped into the water to save her, and was followed by a second Good Samaritan, Dustin.

“Renaldo reached the drowning woman and held her up a bit but in her panic she lashed out at him, grabbing him tightly around the neck and even knocked out his teeth,” said the NSRI commander.

Fortunately an Overstrand Municipality worker, Raowl, noticed the commotion and threw the pink bouy (stationed at Kleinmond Harbour) towards the people in the water.

Working together, Renaldo and Dustin managed to get the woman to hold onto and lie on the pink bouy. They were then able to pull the bouy by the strap towards the safety of the harbour wall and got her out of the water.

The alarm was raised and NSRI Kleinmond Crew arrived to administer first aid. An ambulance was also dispatched.
