Smart meter electricity customers now have a load shedding solution
If you are a smart meter electricity customer, there is a loadshedding solution that will enable you to keep your lights and fridge on.
With the current load shedding situation, businesses are losing money and South Africans are feeling increasingly frustrated. If you are a smart meter electricity customer, there is a new solution that you can benefit from during load shedding from stages 1 to 4.

LOAD SHEDDING: TAKE CONTROL
Load limiting is a clever way to manage the demand for electricity. It helps Eskom to keep track of how much electricity people are using in real time. The goal of load limiting is to enable people to use some appliances during load shedding. To make sure there’s enough supply for everyone, you will have to switch off appliances that use a lot of electricity during this time. These include: geysers, stoves, washing machines, and pool pumps. If you do not switch off these appliances, the meter will disconnect the power for a while and show the reasons for the disconnection. It will display “Power overload” in this case.
The program has gained a lot of momentum since it was introduced to 12 500 customers with smart meters. Once the solution is fully implemented, areas with smart meters will be protected from experiencing loadshedding during stages 1 to 4.

LOAD LIMITING: KEEP YOUR FRIDGE RUNNING
During the load limiting period, you can continue using the following:
- Lights
- TV
- Cellphone charger
- Fridge
- Laptop
- Wi-Fi router
- Security systems
You will receive a message on your cell phone an hour before the start of loadshedding to prompt you to reduce your consumption for the load limiting solution to work.
The success of this initiative relies on the cooperation of Eskom and its customers.
